UPDATE: The Harvest Co-op has made an “internal decision” to stop stocking Sabra Dipping hummus!

Thanks to all who supported us and stopped buying Sabra and Tribe.

We are still pursuing boycott and referendum policy issues with the co-op, so stay tuned!

UPDATEHarvest Co-op Referendum

While we collected 481 member signatures in support of our boycott referendum and over 500 more from concerned shoppers, the Harvest board disqualified us on a technicality, blocking a simple vote by the membership on whether or not to stock Harvest and Tribe hummus.

Take action!

Dear Friends,
In response to the Palestinian call for a global boycott of products linked to the Israeli occupation and Israel’s human rights abuses, for the past few months we’ve been working to get the Cambridge and JP Harvest Co-ops to de-shelve Tribe and Sabra Dipping products.  In March we asked the Harvest Co-op board for a referendum on our hummus boycott, and in April they said they would hold the referendum only if we collected signatures from 10% of the active Harvest membership. This means that we need to collect 360 signatures from active Harvest members, and as many signatures from Harvest shoppers as possible.  In the past month, we have collected 101 signatures from active Harvest members and 211 from non-member shoppers. We’ve had some great leafletting days, and some productive exchanges with community members.

But in order to continue to build our campaign and win a referendum, we need your help! Here’s what you can do:

1. Sign up to collect signatures. Right now we are planning to collect signatures at Riverfest on Saturday June 4, atHarvest Co-ops in Cambridge and JP on Wednesday, June 8, and at the Cambridge Farmer’s Market in Central Square on Monday, June 27. Sign up for an hour on any or all of these days by emailing us at bostonhummuscampaign [at] gmail [dot] com. We would also like to be present at Palestine and Social Justice-related events in the area. If you have any ideas, let us know!

2. Circulate the online petition. We have an online version of the Harvest petition that we’d like you to send to your lists, post on your Facebook pages, and circulate as widely as possible! See the petition here.

3. Keep boycotting. Wherever you shop, boycott Tribe and Sabra Dipping (the hummus with the sun logo, not be confused with Sabra Homus of Norwood with the cedar tree logo) products. If you think store owners might be receptive, give them a fact sheet. Fact sheets are available for download at the top of this page.

Please join us in trying to achieve justice for Palestinians, one chick pea at time. Thanks in advance for all your help, and we look forward to celebrating with you upon our successful collection of 360 signatures from active Harvest members. Stay tuned for details about our celebratory Hummus Referendum Barbecue!
